Weve travelled Europe, Byron
You with your title
Me with a rail pass.
You travelled long
with much luggage
living wherever you stopped.
Ours is much more the life of a turtle
everything we have upon our back
and still just a visitor wherever we are.
At times it feels more like the life
of a small sea creature
that crawls from shell to shell
hoping to find one that fits
for a while.
Wherever you were
your reputation and title assured your welcome.
The rich will always pay to house the famous
while their wives sneak glances
before walking in the garden.
You wrote of the decadence of Europe, then
While we, now, sleep upon it.
In Barcelona, it was a fine country villa
now surrounded in suburbs.
In Alicante, it was a prison
out of date, unused,
Thrown open to youth...
