ORLAND FRENCH

Orland French was born in Midland, Ontario and studied journalism at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto. He began his newspaper career at the Kingston Whig-Standard, covering municipal politics in the 1960s. After a stint as Parliamentary Press Gallery reporter and editorial writer at the Ottawa Citizen, he became a provincial affairs columnist at the Globe and Mail. Later he taught journalism at Loyalist College in Belleville and the University of Regina in Saskatchewan. He currently writes and edits local history books through his company, Wallbridge House Publishing, in Belleville, Ontario.

The company was formed in 1898 by farmers in Hamilton Township, near Cobourg, Ontario, who could not afford fire insurance offered by existing companies. They were following the examples of fellow farmers across eastern Canada and the United States, when the creation of small farm mutual insurance companies was common. Today there are still 50 farm mutual fire insurance companies existing in Ontario, with most offering a full range of services at prices competitive with large companies. Our Mutual Century was given to clients by the Hamilton Township Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company and is not available for sale. The 96-page book, printed on quality stock with numerous black-and-white photos, was enthusiastically received by the company.
