directions to the cottage: a sample

Coming from the east
You take Highway 60
At Renfrew or Cobden
And then drive
For another three hours.

You get to a side road
You take the paved side road
For about 25 minutes
Until you get
To the sign that says the road ends.

But the road hasn’t ended.
You follow the road past the sign
Until it does end
At the government dock.

But to the right
Is a dirt road
With its gravel hidden
Beneath the fallen leaves
Of Muskoka’s autumn.
Up this road
Carefully
One never knows where the ditch is
Or the washouts are.

Turn down the second driveway
To the cottage
Looking out over the lake.
Luggage and groceries
Are carried down
To the cottage
With a case of beer.
A well-earned cold one
Is cracked open
As I walk out
Onto the deck.

Tomorrow I may take out the canoe
To see the fall colours
Hidden in the morning’s autumn mist.

The loon gives a possessive call
Knowing my presence
Means nothing at all.
